Ideas Magazine

illustration and design

Ideas is a high-end magazine aimed at individuals working in the graphic design Industry.  It likes to think outside the box and focus on dynamic design and presentation.  Ideas required cover artwork for its “Drawing Techniques in Graphic Design” addition.

An architectural approach was used for the concepts.  A combination of shapes and textures were used to create an abstract and cartoon-like city skyline with a compressed perspective.  Bright primary colours were chosen to evoke a child-like quality.

Digital illustration was combined with traditional techniques such as frottage and acrylic painting. Brushes and rollers were used for the paint application.

Two final concepts and design layouts were created with these methods; one in colour and the other in black in white.

Lemon Milk was the typeface chosen for its architectural qualities.  Size, colour and placement were used to aid hierarchy.
